Introduction

The question, "What's the matter with architecture?" may be understood on multiple registers.
Taken colloquially, it asks about the current state of the architectural practice and its product. Such query always denotes a worry or concern over something that has perhaps gone wrong, become a problem, or deviated from accepted norms. At the same time, however, the question may also be understood in a more literal and material sense. In this case, it inquiries about the ontological status of architecture's matter, questioning both the subject matter of the discipline and the materiality of its product.
Appliance House is one of the sites in which this multifaceted question has lodged itself. It is a place in which one is compelled to raise fundamental questions concerning the current state of architecture with respect to its subject and substance.
