History

Appliance House began as a set of drawings made by Ben Nicholson in Houston, Texas between 1986 and 1988.

In 1989, the project and its architect migrated north to Chicago. Here Appliance House entered its first phase of construction as part of a studio course at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In 1990, Nicholson presented the results of the project in Appliance House, a text published under the Chicago Institute for Architecture and Urbanism series by MIT press.

In the 1995/96 academic year, a second phase of construction was completed at UIC.

In September of 1996, the result of these various phases of design and construction were incorporated into an installation at the Renaissance Society in Chicago.
