Function

Appliance House exists as both church/temple and virtual reality. This bifacial manifestation permits two, opposite movements along a single axis. The Kleptoman Cell is a place in which material objects strive to become information.

The movement of the cell is as follows:

Objects are introduced into the room
Quarantined & sorted by the Telamon Cupboard
Stored by becoming embedded in the walls of the room
And catalogued by an index or map situated at the rear wall opposite the cupboard.
The Kleptoman Cell, therefore, is a mechanism through which material things become encoded as immaterial information that can be manipulated, stored and indexed. In this way, the Cell traces the desire for immateriality and disembodiment that animates all transcendental and apocalyptic operations--Religion, Metaphysics, Weaponry and Information Theory.

The computer structures trace an opposite motion along the same axis. Here information strives to become material. The movement of the virtual system is one in which information, literally a sequence of zeros and ones, desires material being.

In the Appliance House, these constructs are no longer mere representations or images of the "real thing." They do not behave according to the logic by which the real has been differentiated and quarantined from its iconographic delegate--the drawing, the model and the sign. Rather, these cyberspacial entities endeavor to become the very material of the House itself. In this way, they behave according to a new logic of simulation, becoming virtually real.

No longer satisfied with representing things, virtual reality reproduces the desire for materiality that animates the very process of genesis.
