The work whose first volume we are presenting today has two objects. As an Encyclopedia, it is to expose as much as it is possible the order and connection of human knowledge. As a Reasoned Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Trades, it is to contain for each science and for each art, be it liberal or mechanical, the general principles that form its base and the most essential details that make-up its body and substance.
